a short stop-motion animation about the conflict of two opposing superbeings and one innocent victim!

For the second quarter of we were asked to form groups and make a short stop-motion movie. So together with Suriya Siero, Marvin Dophemont and Loïs Westra I created ‘Proelium’.

Proelium is a short story about the origins of every conflict. Every conflict has at least two sides. None of them are necessarily bad or good. They are just incapable of understanding each other’s perspective. When the two ego’s clash, the only real victims are the ones that never wanted to fight in the first place.

We Illustrated this with characters inspired by the jugendstill movement and the Bauhaus movement.

We created this concept in the form of three characters. Two opposites and an innocent victim. It was important that the two superbeings would both look intimidating in their own way. It was also important that their would be a clear difference between the two egos. That's why we inspired one to the organic and soft Jugendstill movement and the other to the rigid abstract bauhaus movement.

We designed the final character to be the opposite of the other two. He had te be simple, boring and not in the least intimidating! That's why we designed him to just be a piece of cloth with a face. We wanted him to almost dissapear in his surroundings to show that he is a representation of the neutral world.

The whole film is set in a desolate and empty world. The two Ego’s form the world in their image.  The innocent character watches how the other two are slowly closing in on each other. he can only wait for the inevitable confrontation to begin.
